United Nations Lifts Sanctions on Syrian President Before Presidential Visit

Security Council representatives approved to a US resolution ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his presidential meeting the coming week.

He was appointed interim leader after leading a revolutionary movement that drove out the previous leader in winter 2024, ending thirteen long years of civil war.

The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that recognised Syria was in "a different period" since Assad was deposed.

Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions while commanding the Muslim faction the HTS movement, previously associated with the extremist organization. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups in July.

More Penalties Removed

The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of these restrictions, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude to Washington and allied countries for assisting of Syria and its people."

Upcoming White House Meeting

Sharaa's White House visit on Monday follows President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" working toward stability to the previously divided state.

After the meeting, the US president stated Sharaa had "a real shot for national reconciliation".

Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through the region.

After that meeting, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".

His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria before he cut connections in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

The upcoming meeting does not represent his initial visit to America in the current year. During September, he became the initial Syrian president to speak before the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters after approximately sixty years.

In his speech, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
