The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance

In this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies is dedicated to collecting teeth from slumbering youngsters and placing treasure beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more curious about the financial workings of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who provide metal as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous creature he had imagined.

A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people together. The two species as seen here are remarkably alike, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the other. The fairies are supposed to be entitled types, prone to stealing anything they want, while goblins are reportedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario needs a shared foe to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, though not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression

You won’t find all that many children’s animations aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience early romances, but aren’t yet mature enough for the content 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster falls into this age group, it probably won’t to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.

The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
