Federal Government Prepared to Dispatch Scores Government Officers to the Bay Area
The White House seemed ready on Wednesday to deploy scores of law enforcement personnel to the northern California for a major border security initiative, triggering criticism from local politicians.
Information of the Deployment
Specifics of the mission were still emerging, but it will reportedly involve over a hundred law enforcement personnel, according to reports. The personnel are expected to begin occupying the US Coast Guard base in across the bay, facing San Francisco. It was not confirmed whether state soldiers would also be involved.
Political Backlash
The mission follows weeks of warnings by the administration to focus on the Democratic-run city. California’s governor Gavin Newsom denounced the move, labeling it “straight from the authoritarian playbook”.
“He dispatches covered agents, he sends out border agents, he sends out ICE, he generates anxiety and fear in the population so that he can take credit for addressing that by dispatching the national guard,” Newsom said. “This is exactly like the arsonist putting out the blaze.”
Municipal Planning
San Francisco is the latest large urban area singled out by the administration's initiative of widespread apprehensions. The mission is expected to trigger a showdown between the administration and local leaders who have vowed to block armed border control in the city.
San Franciscans have been gearing up for an extended period for Trump to carry out repeated threats to send troops to the city. At a Wednesday public announcement, San Francisco’s city leader stated again that the city was prepared.
“For months, we have been anticipating the likelihood of a potential national intervention in our city,” declared the leader, explaining that he had enacted new policies on Wednesday to “bolster the city’s assistance to our foreign-born residents, and guarantee our offices are prepared prior to any federal deployment.”
Legal Framework
Regardless of judicial disputes to missions in a number of cities, including the Windy City, the Pacific Northwest and Los Angeles, Trump has declared “absolute authority” to send the national guard in cities, pointing to the presidential authority which allows presidents certain rights to deploy troops on American territory.
Public Reaction
The governor, who once held office as San Francisco’s chief executive – had pledged to step in “without delay” to a deployment in the city. “The notion that the national administration can send forces into our cities with no valid reason based on facts, no oversight, no accountability, no consideration of regional control – it represents an infringement on the judicial framework,” he said on Wednesday.
Public associations, including advocacy organizations formed in the initial federal leadership, have prepped to quickly mobilize a public demonstration in the city, as well as vigils at community centers.
Neighborhood Effect
In San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood, a predominantly Latino community, elected official told reporters last week she and her residents had been preparing for this time. “The time that workers cease employment, when minority individuals are afraid to go outdoors without the apprehension of Trump’s federal agents discriminating against and arresting them, the moment when parents stop sending kids to school, are too scared to go to the food market or physician,” she said. “The readiness efforts in the Mission is essentially a closure the extent of which we haven’t seen since the health crisis.”
Military Condition
About 300 out of four thousand state military personnel continue under national command under an directive from Trump. Approximately 200 of them had been transferred to the neighboring state, where they were waiting in limbo amid a legal battle over their assignment.
This time, Newsom said he had summoned the local soldiers under his command to staff distribution centers during the federal closure.
